We have a confession to make: we are a little biased when it comes to this place. After all, Bluff Park Animal Clinic has been part of this community since 1972 — and for those of us who walk through these doors every single day, it feels a lot like home.
So when we decided it was time for a renovation, we did not just want a facelift. We wanted this space to truly reflect who we are and what we believe every visit here should feel like.
A Little History
For over fifty years, Bluff Park Animal Clinic has been caring for sick animals, promoting responsible pet ownership, and supporting preventative health care through client education.
The clinic was established by Dr. James M. Erwin and continues today under the direction of Dr. Eric Skocelas, who joined the practice in 2002 and purchased it from Dr. Erwin in 2017.
Our story was even featured in From the Ground Up: Birmingham’s Business History, A Legacy of Giving (2023)—a testament to the roots and relationships that have shaped our clinic over the decades.
We are not a corporate chain. We are your neighbors — locally owned, community-focused, and deeply invested in the families (two-legged and four-legged alike) who walk through our doors. That has never changed, and it never will.
Why We Renovated
We talk a lot about making your experience here as comfortable, seamless, and stress-free as possible for you, for your pet, and for our team. But talk is easy. We wanted to put our money where our mouth is.
When you visit us, we think of ourselves as hosts. We want the moment you step inside to feel warm and welcoming — the kind of care and attention you would want for your own pet. That means a clean, organized, thoughtfully designed space that makes it easier for our staff to do their best work and for you and your furry family members to feel at ease from the moment you arrive.
So we rolled up our sleeves (and yes, there was a brief but dramatic period of paint fumes, construction chaos, and even “car appointments” - anyone remember those days? — our team were troopers). The renovations began about a year ago and were completed last spring.

What has always made Bluff Park Animal Clinic special is the people — the relationships, the trust, the genuine care that happens in every exam room, at every front desk interaction, and in every follow-up call. The renovation did not change any of that. If anything, it gave us more room to do it better.
